PART 0: OUTREACH

Part of our founding mission was to find alternative routes for architecture thereby making architectural education more affordable and accessible. Access and outreach is part of our DNA, and that’s why we’re developing Part 0 as a vehicle to deliver – and exceed – the ambitious targets in our Access and Participation Plan. In 2022 our Access and Participation Plan Variation for 2024/25 was approved.

INTRODUCTION

Part 0 provides a holistic and integrated vision for widening access to built environment careers to young people and career-changers. It is a campaign to open up space for a joined up conversation about foundational learning across the built environment, and describes a set of programmes that we are currently running, with support from Foundation for Future London and R&Co4Generations.

Our innovative, targeted interventions aimed at 13-19 year olds and career changers – from Levels 2-5 – will widen access to future-facing built environment practice, emphasising green skills, removing economic, cultural and social barriers to equity and diversity.

Part 0 will provide:

  • A Ladder of Learning from Level 2 to Level 5 in built environment practice
  • A Framework to bring coherence to a currently fragmented offer, offering an equitable and accessible route through to architectural and other forms of built environment education
  • A Bridge to close the gap between ‘professions’ and ‘trades’, focussing on new forms of practice to enhance green skills and deliver retrofit

We currently run three Part 0 programmes:

(UN)BUILDING: DESIGN, SPACE AND CITY MAKING

(Un) Building is a new and bold programme for 13- to 16-year olds developed by the LSA in collaboration with the RIBA and LIFT (Leading Inclusive Futures Through Technology) as part of the National Saturday Club programme. Our first (Un)Building programme was a free 20-week course for young people in Hackney and Islington from underrepresented communities in architecture, delivered on Saturday afternoons (2pm to 5pm) from the 7 January to the 27 May 2023 at the LSA in Haggerston and other locations across the city.

The London School of Architecture’s trailblazing Extended Project Qualification will introduce students in Year 12 to a foundation in architecture. Its radical curriculum places an understanding of the environmental and societal impact of the built environment at its heart. Students will be guided through skills development workshops and mentored to complete an exciting personal project, resulting in a high quality design portfolio.

The EPQ will launch in October 2023, but we are gathering expressions of interest now. Follow the link on the left to read more.

PLANBEE LONDON: HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS

PlanBEE London is a new and unique higher apprenticeship programme in Design, Construction and Management delivered by The London School of Architecture (LSA), Ryder Architecture and Gateshead College. It builds on the nationally award-winning PlanBEE programme which has been running successfully in the North East for 7 years and in Manchester since 2021.

This programme is open to anyone aged 18 and over with a passion for design, construction and leadership. You’ll study one day a week at the London School of Architecture and spend four days a week working for one of our sponsor employers from across different sectors in the built environment. During the 2-year programme you’ll rotate around a number of different employers so you get a flavour of the wide variety of roles in the industry including architecture, building engineering and construction/site management all with a strong emphasis on digital skills, before choosing what you enjoy the most.
